2019 Youth Business Summit

Molding tomorrow’s leaders today

June 6, 2019

This spring Deloitte’s early ID recruiting team headed to New York City for the annual Youth Business Summit (YBS) hosted by Virtual Enterprises International (VE), an educational nonprofit that seeks to transform students into business professionals by bringing the workplace into the classroom.

Hands-on skills-based career experiences

Throughout the year students were guided by VE staff and supported by entrepreneurs and business leaders who volunteered as classroom speakers, business plan coaches, and competition judges to help students develop real-world business, operations, marketing, and communication skills. All their hard work and preparation culminated at the Summit, where they showcased their newly learned skills and business ventures.

At this year’s event, high school students from around the world participated in leadership events, networking forums, and several small business competitions. The competitions covered core areas of operating a business including finance, marketing, human resources, and sales pitches. Other highlights included a global business challenge, best booth, and sales material competitions.

Deloitte has had a long-standing relationship with VE and over the years, has hired more than 50 VE alumni who started their professional careers at Deloitte. Deloitte professionals also volunteer for ongoing classroom mentorships each year. Molding and mentoring tomorrow’s leaders through relationship building and mentorship opportunities are important to Deloitte.

Showcasing the importance of well-being

This year the Deloitte team was excited to host a well-being hub at the Summit, where students could unwind and de-stress before their presentations. The well-being booth featured snacks, recreational coloring, photo books, and a meditation-station.

“We know how hectic things can get for students, they are juggling school work plus preparing all year for the competition,” shared Libby Wallin, lead campus recruiting specialist, Deloitte Services LP. "We wanted to create a space where students could relax by taking their mind off the competition, while also sharing ways they can embed well-being habits into their day to combat stress and anxiety."

A culture of wellness

Well-being is key to Deloitte’s culture. We empower our people to focus on what’s most meaningful to them in body, mind, and purpose. Similarly, students also need to identify their own well-being needs as they start to think about career choices, juggle school work, college applications, extra-circular activities, as well as an active social life.

“As a Summit sponsor, we wanted to help students to understand the importance of well-being so that they can start developing those habits early,” noted Libby. “By sharing the things that are important to Deloitte, like well-being, students can better understand Deloitte’s culture and how we serve our clients.”
